Maritime Provinces Ink Deal to Coordinate Electricity Grid, Weigh Joint Operator
New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island signed a memorandum of understanding to coordinate electricity planning, with a regional transmission road map expected by next spring, according to a Canadian Press report via Daily Commercial News. The three provinces will also consider creating an independent electricity system operator to manage power delivery across the Maritimes. The deal, announced ahead of a premiers’ meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Charlottetown, coincided with a $5.9 million federal funding announcement to begin planning and technical work on two new undersea power cables linking New Brunswick and P.E.I. The cables, rated at 200 megawatts and 138 kilovolts each, are targeted for construction by 2028 and will include related transmission and substation upgrades in both provinces. Michelle Robichaud of the Atlantica Centre for Energy said a regional operator could function like an air traffic controller, identifying system gaps and tendering new wind projects as demand grows. Bradley McPherson of the University of New Brunswick’s Centre for Nuclear Energy Research noted the province’s nuclear capacity could backstop renewable projects in neighboring provinces, including Nova Scotia’s proposed $60 billion, five-gigawatt Wind West offshore wind project.
