Kenaidan Murphy JV Wins Grimsby GO Station Build Contract

Ontario has awarded the Grimsby GO Station construction contract to a Kenaidan Murphy Joint Venture, the first station built on the provinceโ€™s new standardized design, Daily Commercial News reports.

Market Impact

The province says the standardized station design is meant to lower construction costs and speed up delivery, according to the release cited by Daily Commercial News. Completion is expected in the second half of 2027. The station is meant to cut travel times to the nearest GO station by up to 30 minutes and support more GO service on the Lakeshore West line.

The scope is compact. The station will have one rail platform with a heated shelter and canopy, a five-bay bus loop for GO and regional transit, 220 parking spaces, bicycle parking and dedicated passenger pick-up and drop-off zones. The source does not state a contract value or a list of subcontract packages.

Work is already moving. The province began early work earlier this year, including tree and vegetation removal. Current work is site grading, followed by excavation and platform foundation construction.

What It Means for Subcontractors

The source does not give tender dates, bid deadlines or a subcontractor procurement process. The points below are our inference from the scope and schedule described.

  • Earthworks and civil: Site grading is under way now, with excavation and platform foundations next. Those packages are the nearest-term work and are likely already committed or close to it. Excavation, shoring and concrete foundation crews have the narrowest window.
  • Paving and site work: A five-bay bus loop, 220 parking spaces and pick-up/drop-off zones add up to a meaningful paving, curbing and drainage scope. These packages typically follow foundations, so buyout would fall in the months ahead. Bicycle parking and line painting are small add-ons within that work.
  • Structural, electrical and mechanical: The heated shelter and canopy point to structural steel or canopy fabrication, plus electrical and heating work. The source does not say how these packages are split or who holds them. Pursue them through the Kenaidan Murphy JVโ€™s buyout, since the contract is already awarded.
  • Schedule pressure: Completion in the second half of 2027 leaves roughly 9 to 15 months from today. Finishing trades should expect compressed sequencing, especially with foundations still ahead.
  • Repeat work: Calling Grimsby the first station on the standardized design suggests more stations may follow. The source does not name them. Subs that perform well here and learn the standard details could be better placed for later packages, which is our inference.
