Fervo Energy and Google Sign Record 396 MW Geothermal PPA
Fervo Energy and Google have signed a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement, the worldโs largest enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) deal to date, according to a Fervo Energy press release. The agreement supports continued development of the Cape Station GeoCluster in southwest Utah, expected to come online in 2028.
The Deal
Under the PPA, Google will purchase carbon-free power from Cape Station to serve as a foundational building block for a potential data center in Utah. Fervo is also offering Google an option to expand its offtake by roughly 600 MW, bringing total capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt by June 2030, according to the release. Final data center plans still depend on engineering feasibility, state and local approvals, and commercial conditions.
Cape Station is billed as the worldโs largest EGS development and is expected to begin delivering electricity to the grid this year, expanding beyond its initial 100 MW phase.
โThis agreement reinforces that EGS is ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure,โ said Tim Latimer, CEO and co-founder of Fervo Energy, in the release. โAs demand for reliable electricity grows, customers like Google need energy resources that can be deployed at scale, operate around the clock, and deliver where power is needed.โ
The Fervo-Google relationship dates back to Project Red, a commercial pilot in Nevada that came online in 2023 and helped pioneer Nevadaโs Clean Transition Tariff through a subsequent 115 MW PPA signed with Google and NV Energy in 2024.
The new PPA is structured under Utahโs SB132, which, pending regulatory approval, is expected to give Fervo and Google direct-to-load contracting options as Fervo scales its โGeoBlockโ drilling and construction approach.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Drilling contractors, well services crews and piping subs in southwest Utah should expect sustained multi-year work as Fervo scales Cape Station toward its potential 1 GW buildout, well beyond the initial 100 MW phase already in service.
- Electrical and civil contractors supporting data center construction should watch Utah permitting and siting processes tied to this deal, since Googleโs data center plans remain contingent on state and local approvals that have not yet been finalized.
- Firms with geothermal well-field experience or transferable oil-and-gas drilling capability are positioned to benefit as Fervoโs โrepeatable, industrialโ GeoBlock model favors standardized, scalable execution over one-off project builds.
- Contractors in other geothermal-favorable basins should track this deal as a signal that hyperscalers are treating EGS as a viable baseload alternative to gas or nuclear, a shift that could open bid opportunities beyond Utah and Nevada.
