Arena Energy Starts Multi-Well Shelf Program With Refurbished Jackup Rig
A $65 million rig refurbishment has put White Fleet Drillingโs WFD 450 jackup to work on a multi-well drilling program for Arena Energy on the Gulf of Mexico shelf, World Oil reports.
Market Impact
The WFD 450 was built in 1999 and previously operated by Valaris before sitting cold-stacked in the shallow-water Gulf for seven years. White Fleet Drilling acquired the rig and put it through an extensive repair and upgrade program before christening it in January 2026. The rig deployed to drilling operations in late March 2026 and has been working in the Southern Eugene Island area since.
Rated for water depths up to 400 ft and total drilling depths of 30,000 ft, the rig gives Arena access to platforms that had been out of reach of the available Gulf jackup fleet. Arena Energy co-founder and CEO Mike Minarovic said the rig lets the company target proved reserves left undeveloped because of equipment constraints. โThe Shelf still holds vast potential, and the WFD 450 gives Arena the reach to unlock proved reserves that no other rig in the Gulf could access,โ Minarovic said. Arena and White Fleet expect the rig to remain active on the Gulf shelf for the next 15 to 20 years, with continued work planned across Arenaโs shelf leasehold.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Rig-support trades, including wireline, cementing, mud logging, and well testing crews, should anticipate sustained demand tied to Arenaโs Southern Eugene Island drilling and the broader shelf leasehold program expected to run 15 to 20 years.
- Platform-focused contractors, including scaffolding, coatings, and mechanical crews, may see new work as the WFD 450โs deeper reach brings previously inaccessible platforms back into active development.
- Companies that specialize in rig refurbishment, including hull repair, top-drive overhaul, and marine systems upgrades, can point to the $65 million WFD 450 project as a benchmark for cold-stack reactivation scope and cost on Gulf shelf jackups.
- Fabrication and logistics providers serving shallow-water Gulf operations should track Arenaโs leasehold activity for follow-on subcontract packages as the multi-well program expands beyond the initial Southern Eugene Island wells.
