Archer Lands $90M YPF Deal for Third Vaca Muerta Super-Spec Rig
Drilling Contractor reports that Archer has been awarded a new five-year contract from YPF, with two one-year extension options, to deploy a third super-spec rig in its Vaca Muerta fleet in Argentina. The deal carries an estimated value of approximately $90 million over its firm term and deepens Archerโs long-term footprint in the shale play.
The rig, leased from Patterson-UTI, will be equipped with managed pressure drilling technology. Itโs the third additional super-spec rig Archer has brought into the Vaca Muerta fleet as part of its growth plan there. The first of the three rigs started operations in late June 2026, the second is set to mobilize in July 2026, and this third unit is expected to begin operations in Q1 2027.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Managed pressure drilling packages mean opportunities for MPD equipment specialists, well control technicians, and E&I contractors supporting rig instrumentation as the third unit mobilizes ahead of its Q1 2027 startup.
- Rig moves and commissioning tied to the July 2026 mobilization and Q1 2027 startup create near-term windows for rigging, transport, and hookup crews in the Vaca Muerta basin.
- The five-year firm term plus two one-year options signals sustained demand for maintenance, wellsite services, and consumables suppliers supporting Patterson-UTI-leased equipment over the life of the contract.
