Finning Lands $250M Cat Equipment Deal for Alumbrera Copper Mine Restart
According to International Mining, Finning’s South America operation has landed a roughly US$250 million equipment order from Glencore for the reopening of the Alumbrera copper mine in Argentina. Finning disclosed the award in its Q1 2026 results, saying the package “includes the supply of more than 20 large Caterpillar mining trucks along with ancillary equipment and technology support, for delivery expected from Q4 2026 through 2028.”
Finning, headquartered in Western Canada, is the world’s largest Caterpillar dealer, and the Alumbrera order is one of its largest single mining-equipment awards this year. The company said the win “reflects our ability to accompany customers with comprehensive solutions that combine equipment, technology, service and specialised knowledge, contributing to a more productive, efficient and sustainable operation.”
Alumbrera, a long-idle copper mine in Argentina’s Catamarca province, is being restarted under Glencore-backed ownership. The multi-year delivery schedule, stretching to 2028, points to a sustained equipment mobilization and parts/service commitment rather than a single shipment.
What It Means for Subcontractors
A US$250 million Cat order at Western Canada’s largest dealer is a proxy for sustained heavy-equipment demand in the mining sector, even as the immediate project sits outside North America. Contractors supplying parts logistics, field service, or maintenance support to Finning’s operations should expect elevated backlog and technician demand through the 2026-2028 delivery window as trucks and ancillary equipment are commissioned in stages.
