Yellowhead pipeline breaks ground: $2.9B, 235 km across Alberta
Canadian Utilities has started construction on its $2.9 billion Yellowhead Pipeline, running 235 kilometres from Peers to Fort Saskatchewan with service targeted for late 2027. It will move 1.1 billion cubic feet of gas per day into Alberta's industrial heartland, and capacity was fully subscribed before regulatory approval wrapped. The company projects about 2,000 direct construction jobs, and the AUC approval came in July with pre-construction work underway since. The release names no EPC firm, lead contractor or construction packages, so start asking now who is building it and how the work gets split.

Work is landing, but the crew pool and the cost sheet are tight. Yellowhead is a $2.9B Alberta pipeline with no contractors named, and Pacific Link and Pathways could add up to 90,000 jobs from 2028, all chasing the same welders and pipefitters. AGC says steel mill products are up 27.6% and beam lead times run into 2027. Our read: if you have skilled hands and material locked in, you hold the pricing power. Build escalation clauses into quotes, secure supply early, and get in front of the primes now, because Yellowhead's packages and Hugo's 43-mile pipeline are not public yet.
