Pembina greenlights $4.6B Alberta gas plant

Plus: a 13-day Alberta well, and oilpatch M&A closing in on $30B

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Big One

Pembina Sanctions $4.6B Gas Plant to Power Meta's Alberta Data Centre

Pembina Pipeline has sanctioned the Greenlight Electricity Centre, a 932-Mw gas-fired power plant in Alberta's Industrial Heartland built to run Meta's $13 billion data centre next door. Total project cost lands around $4.6 billion, with 85% of the $4 billion capital estimate already locked in under fixed-price agreements. The plant targets an in-service date in the second half of 2030, but engineering, procurement and construction crews will be needed on site long before then. It's the first large-scale gas-to-power build tied to a major data centre in Canada, and it signals more behind-the-meter power projects are coming.

โœ๏ธ Editor's Take

Alberta is where the money and the metal are moving. Pembina just sanctioned a $4.6B gas plant to feed Meta's data centre, WesCan is drilling seven-leg wells in 13 days, and M&A dollars are chasing a 2017-style record. That's capex, drilling, and ownership churn all pointing the same direction: line up Alberta work now, not in spring. South of the border, Houston and Corpus Christi are stacking mechanical and E&I scopes onto an already tight labour market where wages keep climbing past 4%. Price your bids assuming scarce trades on both sides of the border.

๐Ÿ“ Where the Work Is

  • Alberta ๐Ÿ”ฅ HOT: A $4.6B gas plant sanctioned for Meta, a record-setting multilateral well, and stacking M&A dollars make Alberta the busiest patch in the country right now.
  • Texas Gulf Coast: Cheniere finished its Corpus Christi build-out and Eli Lilly broke ground on a $6.5B Houston plant, keeping mechanical, E&I and startup crews busy along the coast.
  • Colorado: A finalized methane rule, a new transmission tie-line to Texas, and county approval for the Chalk Bluffs wind and solar project point to steady compliance and construction work across the Front Range.
