Yonge North Subway Tunnel Launch Shaft Complete, TBM Work Begins
Excavation of the tunnel launch shaft for the Yonge North Subway Extension is complete, Daily Commercial News reports, marking a shift into active tunneling for the $1.44 billion advance tunnel project.

Two tunnel boring machines will now begin digging the extensionโs twin 6.3-kilometre tunnels from the site.
The Ontario government awarded North End Connectors, a team led by Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas Canada Ltd. and Ghella Canada Ltd., with design support from EXP Services Inc. and TYPSA Inc., a $1.4 billion contract in August 2025 to design and build the twin tunnels. The province has since issued a request for proposals to qualified teams for design and construction of the extensionโs stations, tracks and support systems. The Government of Canada is contributing $2.24 billion to the project, which will extend TTC Line 1 nearly eight kilometres north from Finch Station into Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill, adding five stations: Steeles, Clark, Royal Orchard, Bridge and High Tech. The release states construction supports 4,300 jobs per year.
