The study, published in the journal PLOS One, found that employer pressure at small firms often pushes plumbers to prioritize productivity over PPE use. It also documented injuries tied to disabling safety features on tools, improper handling of equipment, and rushing to hit tight deadlines.

The health consequences extend well beyond cuts and strains. Plumbers in the study reported exposure to sewer gases, silica dust, and raw sewage that led to chronic respiratory issues, stroke, and even staph infections, along with prolonged heat and cold exposure on the job. Researchers also flagged defective or jury-rigged equipment as a recurring hazard, citing specific examples: an improperly secured trailer, a duct-taped ladder, and a modified wire brush drill. Smaller firms frequently lacked formal incident reporting systems, meaning injuries went unrecorded, while larger companies sometimes logged incidents without any follow-up. The researchers concluded that โ€œsystem weaknesses, unsafe practices and adverse health outcomes are closely intertwined,โ€ and called for coordinated efforts between plumbers and employers to close the gap between perceived and actual risk.
