US Regular Gasoline Tops $4.12 a Gallon, With More Increases Expected

According to Rigzone, the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s latest fuel update shows the average price of regular gasoline reached $4.12 per gallon on April 6, up from $3.96 on March 23 and nearly 88 cents higher than the same period last year. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan warned that inland states, including parts of the Rockies and Great Lakes, could see further sharp increases as wholesale cost surges work through the supply chain, potentially pushing the national average to $4.20 to $4.35 per gallon in the near term.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Fleet-heavy field service companies are absorbing fuel costs that are up roughly 85 cents per gallon year-over-year, a significant hit to margins on fixed-price contracts that didn’t account for this run-up.
  • Rockies and Plains-based crews face some of the sharpest near-term increases, according to GasBuddy, making regional fuel budgets particularly vulnerable right now.
  • Companies without fuel surcharge clauses in their service agreements should review contract terms before renewals, as the upward price trend shows no near-term signs of reversing.
