UK's $4B Grid Project Could Signal US Infrastructure Opportunities

According to Rigzone Original, Britainโ€™s National Grid awarded contracts totaling nearly $4 billion to Hitachi Energy and NKT for converter stations and cable systems for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project. The 428-mile high-voltage electricity link between Scotland and England will transport power for two million homes when operational in 2033.

The project includes approximately 360 miles of offshore cable and represents the UKโ€™s largest electricity transmission project of its kind. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, subject to regulatory approval.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Major transmission infrastructure projects like EGL3 require extensive marine construction, electrical installation, and civil works services that could benefit US contractors as similar grid modernization projects advance domestically

  • Specialized services needed include HVDC converter station construction, subsea cable installation, and underground transmission work that translate to opportunities in US offshore wind and grid interconnection projects

  • The project timeline shows how large infrastructure contracts span multiple years, offering sustained work potential for subcontractors positioning themselves in transmission and renewable energy sectors
