Turner Breaks Ground on Final World Trade Center Office Tower
Construction Dive reports that Turner Construction broke ground July 9 on 2 World Trade Center, the final commercial office tower planned for the Lower Manhattan campus. The New York City-based contractor expects to complete the 2 million-square-foot, 1,226-foot tower in 2031, according to a release from the office of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul. American Express, which tapped Turner for the job in February, will occupy the building as its new global headquarters, with capacity for up to 10,000 people once finished.
The project will use only union labor for core interior construction as well as shell and core activities, the governorโs release stated. Plans call for more than an acre of outdoor space, including terraces and gardens, along with fully electric, energy-efficient systems as the project team pursues LEED certification. Officials did not disclose the total project cost.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Expect a long runway of subcontract packages through 2031, including structural steel, curtain-wall, MEP, and interior fit-out work tied to a 2 million-square-foot tower in Lower Manhattan.
- The project is union-only for core interior and shell and core work, so open-shop contractors should focus efforts elsewhere while union trades in electrical, mechanical, and pipefitting position for scope as packages release.
- The all-electric, energy-efficient systems push and LEED certification target point to early opportunities for electrical and mechanical subcontractors with high-performance building system experience.
