Trump Administration Spares $5B in Hydrogen Hub Funding from Cancellation
According to a Bloomberg report via Rigzone, the Trump administration has released an Energy Department list of roughly 2,000 funding awards it plans to “retain or modify,” including almost $5 billion previously awarded to five hydrogen hubs in Texas, Appalachia, the mid-Atlantic, and the Midwest. Projects backed by Exxon Mobil, Chevron, EQT, and Exelon were among those preserved. Two direct-air capture projects and a carbon-capture cement plant in Indiana were also reinstated. Energy Secretary Chris Wright confirmed the review of approximately 2,200 projects is complete and the agency is “keen to move forward” with the majority.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Hydrogen hub projects in Texas and the Midwest represent significant construction and infrastructure work, creating opportunities for civil, mechanical, and pipeline subcontractors in those regions.
- The reinstatement of direct-air capture and carbon-capture facilities signals continued demand for specialty contractors familiar with industrial gas handling and carbon technology installations.
- Funding modifications are still possible, so subcontractors should monitor contract award timelines closely before committing resources or bids to these projects.
