TransAlta plans 230MW data centre at Alberta gas plant

Power generator partners with CPP Investments and Brookfield for data centre development at Keephills facility, signaling new opportunities for electrical contractors.

FieldNews Staff |

According to BOE Report, TransAlta Corp. has signed a memorandum of understanding with CPP Investments and Brookfield to develop a data centre at its Keephills natural gas plant west of Edmonton, with an initial 230 megawatts of power that could expand to 1,000MW. The electrical infrastructure buildout represents significant contract opportunities for power system contractors as Alberta targets $100 billion in data centre development by 2030.

Subcontractors should care because data centres require extensive electrical infrastructure work, including high-voltage transmission connections, backup power systems, and specialized power distribution equipment that typically involves multiple specialized trades and substantial contract values.
