Skanska JV Lands $1.29B Hudson River Rail Tunnel Contract
According to Construction Dig, a joint venture of Skanska, Traylor Bros., Inc., and Walsh Construction has been awarded a $1.29 billion contract by the Gateway Development Commission to construct Package 1C of the Hudson Tunnel Project. The scope covers two parallel single-track rail tunnel tubes running approximately 7,250 feet beneath the Hudson River, from Weehawken, New Jersey, to Manhattan’s west side. Work also includes tunnel linings and floors, nine cross passages, ground stabilization near the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system, and permanent underpinning of the Willow Avenue Bridge. Work is expected to begin in the coming months, pending notice to proceed.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Tunnel boring, concrete lining, and ground stabilization contractors in the Northeast should monitor this project closely as the JV moves toward mobilization.
- Specialty trades covering structural underpinning, civil earthworks, and rail infrastructure support will likely see procurement activity as Package 1C gets underway.
- The project’s scale and complexity point to a deep supply chain, giving smaller service firms, equipment rental companies, and materials suppliers opportunities to engage early.
