Schneider Electric Canada Wins Electrical and Automation Package for Ontario Line South

According to the Daily Commercial News, Schneider Electric Canada has been selected by Ontario Transit Group (OTG) to supply electrical and automation solutions for the Ontario Line South Civil, Stations, and Tunnels project in Toronto.

Market Impact

The Ontario Line South spans 6.7 kilometres of tunnels and seven stations through downtown Toronto, forming part of the broader 15.6-kilometre rapid transit line running from Exhibition Place to the Eglinton Crosstown LRT at Don Mills Road. The project, valued at $500 million, is being delivered by OTG, a joint venture between Ferrovial Construction and VINCI Construction Grands Projets, on behalf of Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario. Ferrovial has described it as the largest construction contract ever awarded to the firm.

Schneider Electric’s scope includes switchgear, energy management systems, and tunnel ventilation automation. The ventilation system, powered by Schneider Electric’s Altivar variable frequency drives, controls high-volume fans for smoke extraction, evacuation support, and continuous underground protection during both daily operations and emergency scenarios. Major construction is currently underway across multiple station sites in downtown Toronto, with overall project completion anticipated for 2030. When finished, the Ontario Line is expected to handle nearly 388,000 daily boardings and bring more than 227,500 people within walking distance of rapid transit.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • The electrical and automation packages are now committed, but civil, structural, and finishing work across seven downtown Toronto stations represents significant upcoming subcontract opportunity for Ontario-based trades.
  • Tunnel ventilation, switchgear installation, and energy management system commissioning are specialized scopes. Electrical subcontractors with transit or industrial automation experience should be positioning with OTG and Schneider Electric now, while construction is active across multiple sites.
  • With major construction already underway, subcontractors offering concrete, waterproofing, mechanical, and fit-out services should monitor OTG procurement activity closely as station work progresses toward the 2030 target.
  • The Ferrovial-VINCI joint venture structure means procurement decisions flow through OTG. Subs unfamiliar with P3 delivery should understand that Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario set the framework, but OTG manages day-to-day contracting.
