Pembina Greenlights C$4.6B Alberta Gas Power Plant for Data Center

According to a Reuters report via BOE Report, Pembina Pipeline has approved its C$4.6 billion Greenlight Electricity Centre, a 932-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Sturgeon County, Alberta. The facility will supply a first-of-its-kind Canadian data center for an unnamed customer, with in-service targeted for late 2030. Pembina is partnering with Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management, and the project will require roughly 150 million cubic feet per day of natural gas.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • A multi-year build of this scale will need pipeline, electrical, and civil contractors for both the power plant and associated gas infrastructure.
  • Companies with hyperscale construction or industrial electrical experience should watch Alberta closely, as nearly 90% of Canada’s planned hyperscale data centers are slated for the province.
  • Natural gas services firms could see added long-term demand tied to the plant’s daily fuel requirements.
