MSHA Opens $250K Safety Training Grant Window, Deadline Aug. 31
Safety+Health Magazine reports that the Mine Safety and Health Administration is accepting applications through Aug. 31 for its Brookwood-Sago Mine Safety Grants, with awards of up to $250,000 available for organizations developing emergency response and recovery training programs. MSHA says it wants programs covering new agency standards, high-risk activities, and hazards the agency has already identified. States, territories, and private and public organizations are all eligible to apply, and MSHA plans to announce winners on or before Sept. 30. The agency noted it will give “special attention” to programs aimed at miners at newly opened and smaller mines, along with training and compliance assistance for new operators. The grant program is named for a combined 25 miners who died in the 2001 Brookwood, Alabama mine disaster and the 2006 Sago Mine disaster in Buckhannon, West Virginia, and was established under the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006.
