Komatsu, AIM Intelligent Machines Team Up on Autonomous Dozers, Excavators
Komatsu Ltd and subsidiary EARTHBRAIN Ltd have partnered with AIM Intelligent Machines to commercially deploy autonomous bulldozers and hydraulic excavators, International Mining reports.
Market Impact
The partnership has moved past testing into commercial deployment, with Komatsu autonomous machines already running at customer jobsites in the US. A Japan launch is planned for 2027. The companies say the push responds to labor shortages and pressure to improve safety and productivity on construction sites, and note the technology also has potential applications for mining operations running large earthworks and infrastructure fleets.
The system pairs Komatsu and EARTHBRAINโs Smart Construction digital planning platform with AIMโs โphysical AIโ autonomy technology. According to the companies, equipped machines can interpret project objectives, determine construction methods and travel routes on their own, and carry out earthmoving tasks without an operator in the cab. A key detail for fleet owners: AIMโs technology can be retrofitted onto existing bulldozers and excavators, so companies donโt need to buy new equipment to start using autonomous operation. Komatsuโs Chikashi Shike said the goal is โa seamless connection from construction planning and management to autonomous execution,โ while AIM CEO Adam Sadilek said the retrofit approach โenables organisations to make a smooth transition from conventional operations to autonomous construction while continuing to utilise their existing equipment fleets.โ
