Hydro One's Etobicoke 230-kV Line Finishes $10M Under Budget

Daily Commercial News reports that Hydro Oneโ€™s Etobicoke Greenway transmission line, a 230-kilovolt line running 6.5 kilometres between the Richview and Manby Transformer Stations, is now complete and energized. The $73 million project came in on time and $10 million under budget, with the savings redirected toward a recreational trail alongside the transmission corridor. The line can deliver up to 300 megawatts, enough to power 300,000 homes across western Toronto, southern Mississauga and Oakville. Construction supported 100 jobs and wrapped in late 2025, with the line delivering power to communities starting in March 2026. Hydro One sourced approximately 98% of materials from Canadian companies to replace an idle transmission line and upgrade the two transformer stations. The project was first identified in the Independent Electricity System Operatorโ€™s 2019 Toronto Integrated Regional Resource Plan as a priority investment to strengthen reliability in western Toronto.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Electrical and E&I contractors bidding Ontario transmission corridor work now have a real cost benchmark: a 6.5-km, 230-kV line at $73 million, delivered under budget and on schedule, useful for pricing similar Hydro One packages.
  • With Canadian-sourced materials at 98% on this job, subcontractors and suppliers should expect similar domestic-content expectations on upcoming Hydro One procurement, including the Toronto Third Line now advancing to deliver up to 900 MW downtown.
  • Civil and landscaping trades should note that budget savings on this project funded an added recreational trail, a sign Hydro One is willing to fund scope additions from cost underruns rather than simply banking savings.
