EnCore Wins Federal Approval to Build South Dakota's First ISR Uranium Mine

According to Mining.com, EnCore Energy has received Bureau of Land Management authorization to begin construction at its Dewey Burdock ISR uranium project in southwest South Dakota, marking the state’s first in-situ recovery uranium mine. The BLM authorized EnCore subsidiary Powertech to build initial infrastructure including access roads, monitoring wells, and power lines across approximately 240 acres of public land. The project, located near Edgemont, is expected to process 1 million pounds of uranium per year and recover more than 14 million pounds over its 28-year life.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • A 28-year mine life means sustained demand for civil, electrical, and wellfield construction contractors in the Edgemont area, starting with roads, power lines, and monitoring infrastructure.
  • ISR mining relies heavily on drilling contractors and specialty well installation crews throughout the project’s operational life, not just during initial construction.
  • EnCore’s participation in the federal Fast 41 accelerated permitting program signals the project is moving with federal priority, reducing delay risk for contractors planning resource allocation.
