Eli Lilly Breaks Ground on $6.5B Houston Pharma Plant

Eli Lilly broke ground Monday on a $6.5 billion pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Houston, Construction Dive reports, with Bechtel’s manufacturing and technology business unit supporting the project according to a job posting from the general contractor.

The Houston site is one of 10 U.S. manufacturing facilities Eli Lilly has announced since 2020 as part of a $50 billion push to reshore medicine production, according to the company’s news release. It joins a growing list of billion-dollar Lilly projects, including a $5 billion cancer and autoimmune treatment facility outside Richmond, Virginia, announced last September, and a $6 billion weight-loss drug plant in Huntsville, Alabama, announced in December. Other announced sites include Lebanon, Indiana; Concord, North Carolina; Kenosha, Wisconsin; and Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

The Houston facility will produce active pharmaceutical ingredients for Foundayo, Lilly’s first synthetic oral GLP-1 weight loss drug, along with other small-molecule medicines and advanced therapeutics. The plant will incorporate machine learning, artificial intelligence, digitally integrated systems and advanced data analytics, with digital automation embedded throughout operations. “We are thrilled to break ground on our latest ‘medicines made in America’ site in the great state of Texas,” said David Ricks, Eli Lilly chair and CEO, in the release. “We will make and ship Lilly’s latest products from Texas to people here at home and around the world.” Neither Eli Lilly nor Bechtel had confirmed Bechtel’s role as of the report.
