DOE's Genesis Mission Funnels $60M Into Nuclear AI, But Construction Still Years Out
The Department of Energy has selected the first 278 projects under its Genesis Mission, an AI research initiative spanning all 50 states and backed by more than $5 billion in federal commitments, Shale Magazine reports. Announced July 22, 2026, the flagship nuclear component is a three-year, $60 million investment aimed at using AI to overhaul how nuclear plants are designed, permitted, and built, including generative design tools and predictive maintenance algorithms meant to cut capital costs. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright called the selections โthe very best of the nationโs scientific enterprise.โ The 278 projects involve 342 institutions, including 16 national labs, 142 universities, and 157 private companies. A separate $293 million round will fund the underlying computing and data infrastructure supporting the effort.
