Denver Hotel Project Showcases Advanced MEP Coordination for Complex Designs

Hunt Electric used BIM and GPS-guided tools to hide electrical systems in Denver's curved Populus Hotel, demonstrating precision coordination techniques for specialty construction projects.

FieldNews Staff |

According to ENR, Hunt Electric successfully completed electrical work on Denver’s 13-story Populus Hotel using advanced coordination techniques to hide infrastructure within the building’s curved, Aspen tree-inspired design. The project required extensive planning with structural engineers for penetrations and cast-in-place elements, with conduits and devices placed within concrete curves using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and GPS-guided layout tools.

Hunt Electric logged over 55,000 work hours without a lost-time incident, despite challenging site constraints that required lowering major equipment like generators and switchgear through the elevator shaft.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Advanced coordination pays off: Projects with complex architectural designs demand early BIM collaboration and GPS-guided installation tools to avoid costly rework and structural conflicts
  • Hidden infrastructure trend: More commercial projects are requiring concealed MEP systems, creating opportunities for contractors skilled in precision placement and advanced layout techniques
  • Safety focus matters: Zero lost-time incidents over 55,000 hours demonstrates how proper planning and execution can win repeat business on high-profile projects
