Collège Boréal Launches Mining and Civil Tech Program to Fill Northern Ontario Labour Gap
According to Canadian Mining Journal, Collège Boréal has launched a new Construction Engineering Technician, Civil and Mining program at its Timmins, Ont. campus. The two-year program blends classroom instruction with hands-on training for supervisory and technical roles in mine operations, mineral extraction, and infrastructure development. The college cited data from the Timmins Economic Development Corporation showing more than 3,700 mining-related jobs will need to be filled in the region by 2029. The first cohort starts in September 2026.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- A growing local talent pool in Northern Ontario could ease hiring pressure for civil and mining subcontractors operating in the Timmins area over the next few years.
- The program’s dual focus on civil construction and mining environments means graduates may be job-ready for a range of field roles, from site management to infrastructure work.
- Subcontractors building relationships with Collège Boréal now could gain early access to graduates before competition for that talent increases.
