Cenovus Sets Production Records at Foster Creek and Sunrise as Alberta Thermal Output Climbs

According to Oil Sands Magazine, Cenovus Energy hit new production highs across multiple Alberta thermal sites in April, with Foster Creek averaging a record 234,000 bbl/day and Sunrise reaching a record 62,000 bbl/day. Christina Lake held near-record levels at 260,000 bbl/day. Sector-wide, thermal in-situ production averaged 1.73 million bbl/day for the first four months of 2026, up from 1.68 million bbl/day in the same period last year.

What It Means for Subcontractors

  • Record thermal output at Cenovus sites signals strong underlying demand for wellsite services, maintenance crews, and production support contractors across Foster Creek, Christina Lake, and Sunrise.
  • A planned turnaround at Firebag pulled April totals down, a reminder that scheduled maintenance windows drive near-term contract opportunities for turnaround and inspection crews.
  • Suncor added 40,000 bbl/day of Canadian refining capacity across its Edmonton, Montreal, and Sarnia refineries, which points to ongoing capital work at those facilities and potential scope for mechanical and process contractors.
