According to BOE Report, Canada’s oil and gas sector spent $4.3 billion on environmental protection in 2023, leading all industries surveyed by Statistics Canada. The spending covered staff, services, machinery and equipment for pollution prevention and environmental restoration.
The oil and gas investment represented more than one-third of total environmental protection spending across Canada, outpacing mining and quarrying ($1.3 billion) and primary metal manufacturing ($1.1 billion). Over five years from 2019-2023, oil and gas companies invested $17.9 billion on environmental protection.
What It Means for Subcontractors
- Environmental services work is growing as operators increase compliance spending, creating opportunities for specialized contractors in wastewater management, solid waste handling, and air quality control
- Alberta led provincial spending at 39% of the national total, indicating strong demand for environmental contractors in the province’s oil patch
- The consistent multi-billion dollar annual spending suggests stable, long-term contract opportunities for field service companies with environmental capabilities
